Remote work is not a perk to toss into the mix.

The present pandemic situation has brought the term remote working to the limelight. Both employers and employees look into this term from their perspective. Many companies still think that remote working is an untenable way of doing business. However, the employee is now more vocal about labor rights, and they feel moderately more empowered than before. They are fed up, quitting jobs, changing careers more frequently. And employers are a bit unnerved by it all.

Both sides’ misconception is that remote work is something you can do, but remote work is not a perk to toss into the mix. You have to have good leadership, better collaboration tools, and good workflows; otherwise, you invite failure.

The employees need to attend meetings and calls from customers outside the regular office hours, which has been projected as the only alternative to do the work successfully. On the other hand, the organizations are also in a dilemma as to when or how many days they should ask the employees to attend the offices and how that will affect them. With the unpredictable pandemic situation, it isn’t easy to plan something concrete from both ends.

Sometimes, the bad bosses think that the only way to manage is by people in proximity. Whereas the good managers are trying to figure it out, they acknowledge that they need to set new skills and cultivate them. They need to trust the employees working remotely, and it will be mutually beneficial. The workers also need to trust their employers and believe that they are doing everything in the best interest of everyone. They need to prepare themselves for going back to offline work and leave the comfort zone of working from home whenever it is requested. Companies should discuss with their workers before taking any such decision, otherwise forcing the employees to go back to work might worsen the situation.

The best companies are taking a much humble approach towards this issue. They know very well that everything will change in a matter of weeks. So they are listening to their workers and investing in a workplace structure that will allow hybrid work.

The companies should also be very much vigilant about the uses of technology. Technology helps us a lot, but if it is not used wisely, it can bring more stress, waste time, and even create more work.

Working remotely can also sometimes disturbs the balance of personal and work life. We need to keep a balance between these two. Otherwise, it will affect mental peace and, ultimately, our life. Many times, we need to work odd hours that hampers our personal life. So, now many companies are providing flexible working hours so that stress is reduced among the employees. So, the total system should be built so that it should not fail to maintain the balance of life.
